So many training providers only concern themselves with gaining a certificate, and completely miss what it’s all actually about – which is of course employment. Always start with the end in mind – too many people focus on the journey. Imagine training for just one year and then end up doing the actual job for 10-20 years. Don’t make the error of opting for what may seem to be an ‘interesting’ course only to spend 20 years doing something you don’t even enjoy!

You need to keep your eye on where you want to go, and create a learning-plan from that – not the other way round. Keep your eyes on your goals and begin studying for a job you’ll enjoy for years to come. It’s good advice for all students to speak to an experienced industry advisor before they make a decision on a particular study programme. This is essential to ensure it contains the commercially required skills for the chosen career.

You have to make sure that all your certifications are current and commercially required – forget programs that only give in-house certificates. Unless the accreditation comes from a big-hitter like Microsoft, Adobe, CompTIA or Cisco, then you may discover it won’t be commercially viable – because no-one will recognise it.

Many trainers provide a big box of books. This can be very boring and not a very good way of achieving retention. Long-term memory is enhanced with an involvement of all our senses – educational experts have expounded on this for many years.

Modern training can now be done at home via interactive discs. Through instructor-led video classes you’ll absorb the modules, one by one, via the demonstrations and explanations. Knowledge can then be tested by interacting with the software and practicing yourself. You’re looking for evidence of tutorial videos and demonstrations and a wide selection of interactive elements.

Many companies provide online training only; while you can get away with this much of the time, consider how you’ll deal with it when you don’t have access to the internet or you get a slow connection speed. It’s preferable to have DVD or CD discs that will solve that problem.

An important area that is sometimes not even considered by potential students considering a training program is ‘training segmentation’. Essentially, this is the method used to break up the program for drop-shipping to you, which completely controls how you end up. You may think it logical (when study may take one to three years to achieve full certification,) for your typical trainer to courier one section at a time, as you complete each part. Although: What if you find the order offered by the provider doesn’t suit. What if you find it hard to complete all the modules inside their defined time-scales?

The ideal circumstances are to get all the learning modules posted to you immediately; the complete package! This way, nothing can happen down the line which could affect your progress.
